In the Shoes of a Steppe Nomad

In the province of Arkhangai, also known as Northern Khangai, lies one of the most populated regions, or Aimags, in central Mongolia.

The steppes are widespread in these two central regions of Arkhangai and Ovorkhangai, along with numerous streams, making this area rich in pastures and home to a significant population of nomadic herders.

Arkhangai is a plateau rising above 2000 meters, giving this region a bit more humidity than the rest of the country. The landscape stretches endlessly, with small volcanic massifs and a few rock formations surrounding the lush steppes, where many nomadic camps are set up. About 90,000 herders practice nomadism here.

The Khangai massif is the leading region in Mongolia for livestock production, with over 2 million head of livestock. It is also the most famous for its horses.

The abundance of forests allows yurt makers to find the quantity and, more importantly, the quality of wood that has made Khangai yurts renowned.

This stay is designed for travelers who wish to live a unique experience in perfect harmony with nature, at the pace of the nomadic life of the steppes. It is a true immersion into another world, another universe where the watch no longer really matters, and life is guided by practicality and essentials.

Here, man and horse are inseparable. You will likely go horseback riding to drive or bring the livestock close to the camp, search for the horse herd in the hills, or attend to daily tasks like repairing the yurt, handling wood, or preparing cheese. You may also witness the marking of foals or their first ride.

This stay cannot be detailed in advance, as it will depend on the nomadic life and activities at the time.
